Overview of State-Run Schools

A Background on the Education Scenario in Karnataka Overview of state-run schools: 92% of the 50,000 odd schools in Karnataka are state-run schools.
Most schools lack basic amenities such as drinking water and toilet facilities.
More than a few classes share a single room with a single teacher.
30 % of the schools are single-teacher schools. The rest of them combine classes due to lack of space and shortage of teachers.

School dropout rate:

• About 50 % of the children drop out before they reach the 6th grade
• Less than 8 % finish 12 years of schooling
• Only 3 % make it to the end in rural areas.

Probable causes:

A child drops out of school for one or more of the following reasons:

• Need for the child to work to support family income.
• Lack of support from the community for the children to go to school
• Schools not providing a conducive environment for learning
• Lack of awareness about the value of education in the community
